The Sporades Islands

The Sporades Islands are characterized by their dense fir forests which, in some cases, descend all the way to the islands’ sandy beaches; by important archaeological sites; and the National Marine Park near Alonnisos.  The islands were given the name of Sporades (the Sporadic Ones) because of the fact that are scattered throughout the North Aegean Sea. Administratively, the islands of Skiathos, Skopelos, and Alonnisos belong to the Prefecture of Magnisia, while only Skyros, lying south of the cluster, belongs to the Prefecture of Evia.  The first three islands can be reached by high speed vessel or conventional ferryboat sailing from the ports of Agios Konstantinos (Central Greece) and of Volos. They can also be reached by plane landing at Skiathos Airport.
